The Pros and Cons of Renting Storage Space compared to Using Your Garage

A lot of people have so much stuff that they really have no place to put it. Inevitably they end up storing it all in their garage or in their basement. This is usually not the best solution available so you may want to consider other options. One of these would be to use a storage space instead. There are advantages and disadvantages to this of course so you will need to decide if it is a good option for your needs.

The biggest pro when it comes to renting a storage space rather than using your garage is that you can use your garage as, well a garage. Most of us have so much stuff that if we us our garage to store it there won't be room for the car.

Another pro to using a storage space instead of your garage is that your stuff will probably be safer in the storage facility than it will be in your garage. Most storage facilities have fairly sophisticated security systems to help keep your stuff safe.

In most cases you will also be able to rent a climate controlled storage locker which should help to keep your stuff in better condition. Very few garages are climate controlled which tends to limit what can be stored in them because of the damage that the heat or the cold can do. With a climate controlled storage locker this becomes less of an issue than it otherwise would be.

There are of course cons to putting your stuff in a storage locker; the biggest of these is that it is not located at your house which makes getting to your stuff a little bit inconvenient. While this is certainly an issue for some people the reality is that most of the stuff that people put in storage lockers they rarely use anyway. In addition there are now so many storage lockers you should have no trouble finding one that is located near to where you live.

Another con when it comes to using a storage locker instead of your garage is that you do have to pay for it. The cost of a storage locker is not all that high but it is more than the free cost of using your garage. You will obviously need to decide if it is worth the cost of paying for the use of the storage facility.

Another con of using a storage facility is that your possessions are no longer covered by your homeowners insurance. Of course they may not be in your garage either, you need to check your policy on that. When you rent a storage facility the items that you put in it are not insured unless you buy extra coverage. This is something that you need to be aware of if you have anything valuable in your locker.
