At first glance you may think that all storage facilities are basically the same. This is actually completely untrue; there are a lot of special amenities offered by the better facilities. Whether you need these amenities or not is of course up to you but it is nice to know that they are out there in case you decide that you can benefit from them.

The most important amenity that you are going to want to look for when you are choosing a storage locker is security. The type and quality that is available can vary pretty dramatically so this is something that you are going to want to look into. Obviously you are going to get better security if you store your stuff in an inside locker however even outside ones can be quite safe. At a minimum you should expect that there will be an alarm system. However for the best security you are going to want to go with a facility that has onsite security personnel to watch your locker.

The second big amenity to look for when you are choosing a storage facility is one that is climate controlled. Clearly your need for this is going to depend on what you are storing. If you have something in your locker that can't be exposed to extremes of heat or cold then a climate controlled locker is almost a given. Yu will also probably want a climate controlled locker if you will need to go in and out of your locker on a regular basis. Digging through your locker in the heat is no fun. In most cases a climate controlled locker will cost more so you will need to decide if it is worth the extra expense.

Access to your storage locker is also an amenity that you may want to look at when you are choosing a locker. Make sure that the facility has hours that work with your schedule. There are some that allow you access to your locker twenty four hours a day. This can be a huge benefit if you need to get things out of your locker at odd times. There is nothing worse than not being able to get at your stuff when you need it.

It is also a good idea to make sure that the facility that you choose will actually meet your needs. That means that there should be storage lockers in a variety of different sizes, you don't want to have to pay for a much larger locker than you need. Many of the better facilities will offer areas for specific items which can be useful if you are storing one of these items. For example some will have a place specifically for cars or another might have a place for wine where the temperature is kept at just the right level.
